Excerpt from Deliciously Dark Tales

Halloween is coming. To help you prepare, I thought I would share excerpts from Deliciously Dark Tales. Here is the first installment. I hope you enjoy reading it, if you do, please come back and visit for more.

This can't be real, Paul thought. It's just a dream. It has to be a dream.

His first reaction was, Run! He always ran from even a hint of danger. He'd spent his life avoiding larger aggressors, and at his size, they were all larger. But this time he struggled between running, and facing his attacker.

"This ain't no dream squirt, it's your worst nightmare." The muggers blade whistled in an arc so close to Paul's chest the tip snagged the material on the front of his shirt. Without encountering the expected resistance of his flesh, the slash threw the attacker off-balance, but he recovered quickly, and crouched, prepared to thrust the blade into Paul's midsection.

Though he couldn't fathom how, Paul knew by the manner and angle that the mugger now poised the katana blade for a lethal plunge. Part of Paul's mind froze in terror. Another, stronger part, stood waiting phlegmatically for the mugger's next move.

The man lunged, shooting his arm forward, and drove the razor-sharp weapon toward Paul's solar plexus. Without conscious thought, he sidestepped the attack. The knife whispered past, missing its deadly mark.

"Wake up!" Paul yelled.

The attacker's arm followed behind the thrusting knife.

Paul reached out and clamped onto the attacker's wrist with his right hand, twisted, and drove his left hand against the man's elbow. The joint snapped under the blow with a dull crack he felt more than heard...

BZZZZ--BZZZZ--BZZZZ. Complete darkness.

"It was a dream." He reached out from under the warm covers and plucked the cell phone from his nightstand. "Paul here."

Humorous signs

Before having dinner at a Red Robin restaurant I stopped in at the men's room. The sign on the back of the door made me laugh.

"Employees must wash hands.

If no employee is available, feel free to wash your own hands."

Yep, that tickled my funny bone.
It's a blessing to be able to see the humorous in the world around us.

Excerpt from Retaliation, Book 2 in the Almost Human series

Reporters packed the White House press room. As Press Secretary Tillson approached the lectern, they jumped out of their seats and started firing questions. He waved at them, like a rock star to his adoring fans.
When he reached the lectern, he motioned for everyone to sit. Several continued shouting questions. Tillson didn’t answer, and waved again for silence. Once the room quieted, he leaned toward the microphones and said, “I will read a prepared statement today, after which I will respond to five questions of my choosing.”
A murmur rolled through the crowd. A female reporter from the back of the pack leaped up and shouted, “Melinda Martinez, Today’s Truth Magazine. Is it true President Asir knew about these Newvers before the attacks against Homeland Security?”
Tillson tilted his head. Two plain-clothed Secret Service agents muscled their way through the crowd toward Melinda. One on either side, they latched onto her arms and with a practiced sweep, gathered her up along with her purse and briefcase, and all three disappeared through a side door.
“As long as there are no further interruptions, I will read the prepared statement.” -- Excerpt from Retaliation

Retaliation is close to almost ready

Sorry I left Grant and Bessie stuck in the desert in an awful mess.
I've been slaving away getting Retaliation, my next book in the Almost Human series edited. I'm about halfway through, and my brain is running like a roadrunner through burning sage brush.
I promise I won't leave Grant out there too much longer. Well, at least I'll get back to his story anyway.

Tongue Tied Episode 12

Grant
Bessie hurtled down from the sky.
“Not so fast girl,” I yelled so she could hear me over the screaming descent. It felt like I was riding a hawk diving for a rabbit.
She didn’t slow down.
As we neared the ground, I felt her tense.
Thirty feet above the desert floor she adjusted the angle of her wings and stalled, she shuddered, her wings went limp, and we hit the ground — hard.
Drake popped out of Bessie’s mouth on the first bounce.
The impact threw me forward over Bessie’s head, and I tumbled into the only mud hole for fifty miles.
I didn’t see what happened to Aria, or where she ended up.
I struggled to my hands and knees, and I saw red.
Thick red clay clung to my face like a death mask. “What kind of lame-brained excuse for a landing was that?” I sputtered. I wiped gooey mud off my face, and squinted to see.
Bessie lay on her side with her back to me. “Did you hear me, you over-sized lizard?”
Aria poked her head over Bessie’s neck. “She’s hurt.” Aria limped toward Bessie’s chest and disappeared out of sight. “She’s bleeding,” Aria yelled. “Come quick.”
I ran as fast as I could. Between carrying an extra hundred pounds of mud, and feeling like a band of Ubuntu’s had just used me for a killing-stick practice dummy, it wasn’t all that quick.
When I rounded Bessie’s tail, I stumbled and brushed against it. She twitched, like she did during a bad dream, and knocked me down. When I looked up, I saw Aria’s knee inches in front of me.
“Not now, Grant,” Aria said. “Bessie’s hurt. Look at this.” She pointed to a blaster gash in Bessie’s side big enough for me to put my fist into. A trail of dried blood ran down her side from the wound all the way to her tail.
“She’s lost a lot of blood,” I said. “We’ve got to get her some water to make up for it.”
Aria started ripping a strip from her skirt. “And she needs that bandaged before she loses any more.”
“Wait.”
“What?”
“Bessie ain’t a person,” I said. “She don’t need no human germ infected cloth bandage mucking up her system. She’s already in bad enough shape.”
Aria flashed me a look that seemed to border between you’re an idiot, and we can’t just let her bleed to death. “What do you suggest?”
“Mud,” I said. “And less attitude.”
“Mud,” she said. “Talk about infected. And, where you gonna find enough mud to patch that?” She pointed at the gaping wound still oozing blood.
“Trust me,” I said. “I can find the mud.”
She really looked at me for the first time. “Looks like you already did.”
“As far as patching her with it,” I said. “It’s what dragons do.”
“They’re dragons. What’re they gonna do?”
“Them dragon’s been living for thousands of years without no people help.”
