Excerpt from REVELATION

“Simeon to H.S. dispatch.”

After a second of squelch the dispatcher replied, “This is H.S.”
The car lurched as the road changed from dirt to asphalt. Simeon shot a menacing look at the driver, then said into the microphone, “We are returning to base with Mister Burroughs.”

“Were you able to arrive at a peaceful solution?”

Simeon smirked at his partner and shrugged. He keyed the mike and said, “Negative on the peaceful resolution. Circumstances beyond our control made it necessary to take definitive action. Burroughs is a fatality. Sorry, after all, we’re only human.” He released the talk button and started laughing.

The driver laughed so hard he lost control of the car. It ran off the pavement, onto the dirt shoulder and kicked up a cloud of dust and rocks before he regained control and returned it to the asphalt. Through his laughter, the driver said, “I love it, we’re only human. You’re a riot.”

Simeon continued shaking with laughter. “You gotta enjoy your work or you might as well be stuffed in a trunk.”

The car swerved from side to side as the driver struggled to maintain control through another laughing fit. “You kill me…well, not me actually,” he said, setting them both off on another bout of laughter.

When the car reached the highway the driver turned to head south in traffic. The two men settled down, assumed a more somber façade, and the driver kept the car under better control.

“We’re only human,” the driver chuckled.

Dinosaurs in My Backyard

I discovered dinosaurs in my backyard.
Kind of like in the young adult fiction books Revelation, and Retaliation.
It happened when I went out to water the garden. I looked across the fence and there they were. I never thought of them that way before, but I recently read how chickens bear striking similarity to some dinosaurs. So, I thought, maybe...
Who would want one egg that made an omelet for six people?
I mean, if you had a craving for and omelet, or scrambled eggs, but nobody else did, it would be a waste to crack open a ten-inch egg. Even if you were really hungry - the cholesterol alone would be enough to make you think twice about it. Maybe.
But if you could breed smaller dinosaurs...
Get them down to about the size of, say a trilobite. The eggs would be about the right size. Take the dino runt and...
After a few hundred million years of evolving smaller and smaller egg laying dinosaurs through selective breeding, you could come up with a - chicken! As a bonus, when they stopped producing eggs, it would be easier to kill and eat them than vice versa like it was with the big ones.
As long as they didn't evolve into humans and seek retaliation for all those years of captivity.
If we could just figure out how to make cocoa beans the size of watermelons, we could make some mega hot chocolate to drink with our omelets.
On other thoughts, we've got to get Bigfoot to make a public appearance. He could show up and endorse a candidate, or maybe compete in the Boston Marathon, or, wait - Comicon! He wouldn't even need a costume.
The marathon though, that would be something. I watched a show that estimated Bigfoot lopes along at 25 miles an hour. He could turn in a best of class time in a marathon. Of course, he would also be the only one in his class, but maybe the next marathon he could convince some of his buddies to join.
They could have a grudge run.
I'll send him an email and see what he thinks.

It's All True...Except for the Parts I made Up

When readers find out my book Revelation, book one of my Almost Human series, contains Bigfoot encounters, someone will ask if I've seen one. A Bigfoot, that is. Many of them have Bigfoot encounter stories of their own.

Talking about Bigfoot is kind of like talking about UFO's or evolution. There are so many anecdotal accounts and personal experiences that sound convincing, and have certainly convinced the person involved, and although there is scant and questionable evidence for any of them, can we in all good conscience dismiss them all as fantasy?

In Revelation, Michelle not only has a brief brush with a Bigfoot, she actually...but, no that would spoil her story.

Fiction often has its roots in actual events. The locations in Revelation are really there, I've been there and wandered them. I've traipsed across the lava rocks at Yaquina Head and wandered the Interpretive Center. I've been snagged by countless blackberry brambles that grow among the forest undergrowth, followed a stream through the forest, and spent hours meandering deserted beaches discovering human and ocean-discarded creatures, flotsam, and jetsam. I've even run across apparently abandoned seal pups on the sand.

Bigfoot?

Yes, I took the photo, no, it's not Photoshopped, and yes, apparently he was having a bad hair day.

One sunny August afternoon near Rocky Creek Park, I maneuvered my way through the tangled brush on a steep incline. Off to my left, I heard a tremendous splintering crash followed by three thuds, as if something heavy broke through a tree trunk and rolled down the hill. The bushes were so closely grown, I couldn't see what made the noise, until I crawled under a Salal bush to the other side of the leafy screen. Right there, in a small clearing, jammed up against the border of coastal pines lay a huge boulder. What kind of creature had the strength to push a boulder that size down the hill? And where did it go after it pushed the boulder?

It might have been a Bigfoot.

Trailer for the Awesome new cover of Revelation

What is it about the dark forest that elicits fear in some, attracts others, and intrigues many? I think it is the promise of something unknown. Anything could be lurking in the depths. Once enveloped by the forest, the daylight turns a hollow shade of green as it filters through the canopy as if shining through stage lighting. The smell of life, and death, hovers heavily in the moist air. Here life abounds, and ends swiftly.
And the sounds.
A tree limb creaks, something scurries, or slithers, through the detritus at your feet, a crack followed by a grunt, a shrill squeal tapering off into a whimper--then silence.
Something is out there.
Invisible behind a maze of trunks so closely knit they form a virtual wall that shields it from view, but offers no impediment to the beast, if beast it is.
Bigfoot?
Enjoy this trailer to celebrate the new cover for REVELATION .

I'm excited! I've been working with Mikey Brooks on a new cover for Revelation and it's in its final stages.
I think it's fantastic. What do you think?

I'm Here... and There

Both Revelation and Deliciously Dark Tales are now available at
Little Professor Book Center
37 N. St George Blvd, St George, Utah,

Revelation is available at
Stucki Family Pharmacy
568 W. Telegraph St, Washington, Utah.

I now have my own author page on Amazon and am an official Goodreads author. It's the little things that make me smile, subtly, so people around me wonder what odd, strange, and bizarre thoughts I'm having.

And of course, what would a day be without some frivolity?
Yep, that's agent Coulson, in an urn filled with bouncy balls. Why? He's hiding, I think.

Bigfoot footprint cast photo, as promised

The cast of the bigfoot footprint from the garden is hardened. It's coming to life right out of my YA fiction book, Revelation.
Here is a photo of it. I will have it on display at my table during the St George Book Festival on October 20 at Barnes and Nobel in St George, and again at the book event on October 25 at the Children's Museum in St George.
Doesn't look that big?
Here's a comparison photo with my foot next to the cast. I wear an 11.5-12.5 depending on type of shoe (really sandal, I don't wear real shoes unless I must, but let's not get too technical)
Now that's a big foot! Not mine, the other one. And yes, I know the grass needs to be mowed. I am working on the second book in my Almost Human trilogy, Retaliation. It is scheduled to come out in Fall 2015, if I can just keep these pests out of the garden. On the upside, whatever left this print seems to get along with my chickens. None of them are missing, and Ala King, the Black Austrolorp appears to have accepted it, she hangs around the area of the footprints and clucks softly.

New Tribe Appears. It's right out of the pages of REVELATION!

Wow! I saw this story on abc news. It so reminded me of a similar account in my book Revelation, I wanted to share it. The story is like watching part of my book coming to life. (I'm sure that's what abc had in mind)

Tribe Emerges From Brazilian Jungle Possibly for First Time

A remarkable video shows a group of indigenous people seen for the first time by the outside world as they emerged from a Brazilian jungle while fleeing illegal loggers and drug traffickers, according a Brazilian group that tracks such jungle tribes.
The group of men are believed to be natives of Peru but they were filmed in northern Brazil on the banks of the Envira River which runs near the Peruvian border. The encounter took place within the last two weeks, but the video was released today by the Brazilian indigenous authority FUNAI.
The tribal men are naked except for belts and loincloths and carry different weapons, including bows and arrows and spears in the 8-minute video.
A few of the tribal men are seen with markings on their faces and they all have styled their dark black hair in a similar bowl-cut fashion.

I'm excited - Revelation published

It's been a long time coming, but I finally published my Young Adult novel, REVELATION. It's available on Amazon. Way excited about it.
Now it's time to get serious about the second book in the Almost Human series, RETALIATION.
In the meantime, I am building two Square Foot Gardening boxes in an area of my garden that nothing seems to be able to survive in. Since these boxes don't use the existing soil, I hope the plants will survive.
I spend an hour or two working in the yard/garden in the morning, then head to my corner in the secret underground writer's lair to write, or think about writing, or researching, or trying out new ideas, or listening to my characters tell me about their day.
